Donald Campbell (Kiefer Sutherland) grows up in poverty in Depression-era Nova Scotia. His mother (Liv Ullmann), who also has to care for another son who's mentally disabled, is hopeful that Donald will enter the priesthood. Donald is less certain, especially since he's started to notice the likes of Saxon Coldwell (Leah Pinsent).
