The Devil’s Commandment also exhibits a maturity and sophistication with regard to psychological and social issues that is truly shocking in light of subsequent Italian horror films. The behavior and motivation of the characters is extremely well drawn, and everybody with more than a line or two is allowed a rare degree of personal complexity.
