  6. Tom Brown is Tom Brown in "Tom Brown of Culver." The classic story of an orphaned boy who is forced to go to military school because the American Legion, instead of creating a statue for the boy's father, decide to send him to school. Of course it turns out his father is still alive and instead of being a war hero he's a complete coward.

  7. Tom is bitter about his father's death, blaming his mother's death on the hardships it caused, and he does not want to go to the Academy. He fares badly at first, but soon makes friends with some of the other boys and becomes quite happy. Over the Christmas vacation, Tom visits Slim with his closest friend, Robert Randolph, III.
