The name Baden-Württemberg was only intended as a temporary name, but ended up the official name of the state because no other name could be agreed upon. In May 1954, the Baden-Württemberg Landtag (legislature) decided on adoption of the following coat of arms: three black lions on a golden shield, framed by a deer and a griffin.
In 1952 the States of Baden, Württemberg-Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern merged. The new Federal State that emerged was Baden-Württemberg, marking the start of a success story. A success story that continues to unfold to this day, evolving hand in hand with the community.
- Stuttgart. The city of Stuttgart is the regional capital of Baden-Württemberg. Stuttgart is famous for its automotive history, housing both the Porsche and Mercedes-Benz museums.
- Ludwigsburg. Located just north of Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg is renowned for its Baroque Ludwigsburg Palace, sometimes called “the Versailles of Swabia,” and its famous annual Pumpkin Festival.
- Schwäbisch Hall. This historic town has beautifully preserved medieval architecture. Schwäbisch Hall features cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and a striking town square where the famous St. Michael’s Church is located.
- Heidelberg. Often described as Germany’s most beautiful city, Heidelberg is famous for being one of the most romantic cities in Baden-Wurttemburg. Heidelberg’s attractions include a world-famous castle, baroque mansions, a charming old town, lush forests, and a Bohemian atmosphere.
Baden-Württemberg is the only Federal State created as the result of a referendum. In 1952, the States of Württemberg-Baden, Baden and Württemberg-Hohenzollern merged to form a single cohesive State in Germany’s southwest. But the eventful history of the individual states in the Southwest stretches back much further.
Baden-Württemberg is a federal state (Bundesland) in Germany. Its world famous Black Forest and the celebrated, romantic city of Heidelberg are top tourist destinations within Germany and Central Europe, but there is much more to see. Baden-Württemberg is part of the southern German-speaking world where dialect and tradition remain strong.
