Naval Academy in 1931, Rear Admiral McCain served aboard USS S-45, S-34 and R-13 from 1933-38; commanded USS Skipjack, USS 0-8, Gunnel, and Dentuda prior to, during, and subsequent to World War II; he later commanded Submarine Divisions 71 and 51 and Submarine Squadron 6.
