The CSA combines the two population centers of Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. It includes the two counties of the Kalamazoo–Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area plus one metropolitan area, Battle Creek in Calhoun County and one micropolitan area, Sturgis in St. Joseph County .
