Demmin was a stronghold of the West Slav Circipanes during the Middle Ages. Due to its strategical importance, strongholds were erected (and often attacked and destroyed) at the Vorwerk and Haus Demmin sites, named Dimin or Dymin.
On 1 May 1945, hundreds of people killed themselves in the town of Demmin, in the Province of Pomerania (now in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ), Germany. Although death toll estimates vary, it is acknowledged to be the largest mass suicide ever recorded in Germany. The suicide was part of a mass suicide wave amongst the population of Nazi Germany.
Die Hansestadt Demmin [ dɛˈmiːn] ist eine Kleinstadt im östlichen Zentrum des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Seit der Kreisgebietsreform 2011 gehört sie zwar zum Landkreis Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, betont aber stets ihre Zugehörigkeit zu Vorpommern. [2] . Bis dahin war Demmin schon seit 1818 selbst eine Kreisstadt.
