Endolimax is a genus of amoebozoa that are found in the intestines of various animals, including the species E. nana found in humans. Originally thought to be non-pathogenic, studies suggest it can cause intermittent or chronic diarrhea.
Cysts are typically found in formed stool, whereas trophozoites are typically found in diarrheal stool. Infection with Entamoeba histolytica (and E.dispar) occurs via ingestion of mature cysts from fecally contaminated food, water, or hands. Exposure to infectious cysts and trophozoites in fecal matter during sexual contact may also occur.
E. nana cysts can be identified and distinguished from other cysts by their smaller size (9 μm in greatest diameter; range, 5-14 μm, ovoid shape, and one to four vesicular nuclei, each usually containing a large, eccentric endosome). The nuclear envelope is very thin and is difficult to see even in stained preparations.
