    Die Baring Familie ist eine deutsche und britische Kaufmanns- und Bankiersfamilie. In Deutschland gehört die Familie zum aristokratischen Bildungsbürgertum und im Vereinigten Königreich Großbritannien zur adeligen Oberschicht.

    Der älteste bekannte Vorfahr ist Petrus Baring, um 1500 Bürger der Stadt Groningen. Sein jüngster Sohn Franz Baring war 15651582 erster lutherischer Superintendent zu Lauenburg/Elbe für Sachsen-Lauenburg; er ist der Begründer des Lauenburger Hauptstamms. Von seinen Söhnen stammen der Gülzower Stamm in Hannover und der Wasserhorster Stamm, später zu Bremen und in England. Alle bekannten Träger des Namens Baring stammen von diesem Ursprung ab, auch der deutsche Politikwissenschaftler und Historiker Arnulf Baring.

    Nach England wanderte 1717 der aus Bremen stammende Johann Baring aus. Seine Söhne Johann (John) und Francis gründeten 1770 das Bankhaus John & Francis Baring & Co zu London (seit 1806 Baring Brothers and Comp.), das im 19. Jahrhundert zu einem wichtigen Finanzierer von Regierungsprojekten wurde und 1995 zusammenbrach. Francis Baring wurde 1793 Baronet of Larkbear. Sein Neffe William Baring, dessen Mutter der Familie Gould angehörte, wurde 1795 unter dem Namen Baring-Gould mit einem vermehrten Wappen beliehen. Zahlreiche Nachfahren des Firmengründers wurden in den britischen Hochadel aufgenommen und stifteten verschiedene Linien. Zur Nachkommenschaft der Familie gehört auch Diana, Princess of Wales, deren Urgroßmutter Margaret Baring war, die Tochter von Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke, und durch sie auch ihr Sohn Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.
