Korea then became a Japanese colony from 1910 to 1945. Korean resistance manifested in the widespread March 1st Movement of 1919. Thereafter the resistance movements, coordinated by the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in exile, became largely active in neighboring Manchuria, China proper, and Siberia .

The precise location of the division, at the 38th parallel latitude, was chosen by lower-level U.S. diplomatic personnel on an ad hoc basis in 1945.

Chapter 5 traces the division of Korea and the outbreak of the Korean War, noting how many people suffered from that conflict with little positive to show for it. National division marks an important shift in the book, as the next four chapters treat North and South Korea separately. Chapters 6 and 7 are dedicated to North Korea.
