Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 – 18 May 1980) was an English singer-songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer and lyricist of the post-punk band Joy Division and recorded two albums with the group: Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).

Natalie Curtis Sunday September 30, 2007 The Observer On a sunny day in August I finally got to see the finished version of Anton Corbijn's Control, a film about the life of Ian Curtis, my father and lead singer of the band Joy Division. Ian committed suicide in 1980 at the age of 23, when I had just turned one.

- Humble Beginnings. Like so many other seminal 80s post-punk bands, Joy Division formed in the city of Manchester, but Ian Curtis grew up about an hour outside of that formative city; in a working-class home in the industrial town of Macclesfield, Cheshire.
- Poetic Soul. Curtis’s hauntingly introspective and intelligent lyrics became one of Joy Division’s chief hallmarks, and this flair for poetry was something he developed very early on.
- Sticky Fingers. Curtis couldn’t afford to buy music in his teens and used to shoplift regularly; mostly albums from the Macclesfield town center that he would hide underneath his long grey coat, but also bottles of booze from the local off-licenses.
- Elegy For Ian. After Ian’s suicide, the remaining band members famously went on to form New Order, where they found success and continued mold the post-punk landscape throughout the 80s.
