Nakhlites are igneous rocks that are rich in augite and were formed from basaltic magma about 1.3 billion years ago. They contain augite and olivine crystals. Their crystallization ages, compared to a crater count chronology of different regions on Mars, suggest the nakhlites formed on the large volcanic construct of either Tharsis, Elysium, or ...

  4. Nakhla is the first Martian meteorite to show signs of aqueous processes on Mars. The rock contains carbonates and hydrous minerals, formed by chemical reactions in water. Also, the rock was exposed to water after it formed, which caused secondary accumulations of minerals. The carbonates contain more carbon-13 than rocks formed on Earth ...

  5. 3.2.3 The “Fractionated Atmospheric” Component. The nakhlites, like the shergottites, show enhanced 129 Xe/ 132 Xe ratios, but at a lower 84 Kr/ 132 Kr; that is, in the 129 Xe/ 132 Xe versus 84 Kr/ 132 Xe plot of Fig. 3.3 they plot above the mixing line between Chassigny and Mars atmosphere. This has led to the suggestion that they contain ...

  6. The nakhlite lavas erupted and cooled on Mars, and so they are important sources of data about Mars, including: mantle composition, surface materials, atmosphere composition, liquid water, and potential environments for life. This paper reviews our knowledge of the seven nakhlite meteorites.

  7. Amorce Meteorite Museum. History: Purchased in December 2020 by Said Yousfi from a dealer near the Morocco-Algeria border and then acquired jointly by Mendy Ouzillou and Dustin Dickens. Physical characteristics: This somewhat friable specimen was found in several pieces (total weight 139.2 g, comprising stones of 66.1 g and 21.4 g plus other ...

  8. Jul 1, 2005 · The seven nakhlite meteorites are augite-rich igneous rocks that formed in flows or shallow intrusions of basaltic magma on Mars. They consist of euhedral to subhedral crystals of augite and olivine (to 1 cm long) in fine-grained mesostases. The augite crystals have homogeneous cores of Mg' = 63% and rims that are normally zoned to iron enrichment.
