The show was the anchor of NBC's Saturday line-up, and almost always won its time slot, as ABC and CBS struggled to find shows to compete against it, the most notable being ABC's Lucille Ball sitcom Life With Lucy in the beginning of the 1986–87 season although it aired at 8:00, an hour earlier.

"Wild Guess": A game-show send-up (similar to You Bet Your Life) with announcer Ken Kane (Bill Cosby in season 1, Morgan Freeman in seasons 2-6) and host Bess West (Rita Moreno), in which the contestant would guess the day's secret word. When the word was not guessed, West would give three clues as to what the word was.
The episodes did not air in order, with Season 1 and some of Season 2 episodes airing from 11 March 1976 to 17 February 1977 on alternating Thursdays at 21:00, Seasons 2-5 episodes from 9 May 1978 to 11 September 1979 on alternating Tuesdays at 21:45, and Season 6 episodes from 27 May to 9 September 1980, again on alternating Tuesdays at 21:45.
