In Seasons 1-3 the ninja can't use their elements without the elemental weapons or Lloyd, whose power is a combination of the four of theirs, giving them access through the Temple of Light ceremony. So for a while Lloyd is the source of their elemental powers, so they never learn to use them by themselves like Nya can.
