In 1466 Francesco was succeeded by his oldest son, Galeazzo Maria Sforza. Galeazzo's assassination ten years later resulted in the title passing to his seven-year-old son, Giangaleazzo. By 1480, Galeazzo's brother Ludovico had seized power from his nephew. He ruled for two decades before losing control of the city to the French in 1499.
