During the Omayyad Era, the Port of Beirut became the center for the First Arabic Fleet.

The Port of Beirut was rehabilitated and it expanded to encompass 4 docks, 2 new quays (15,16) and new container terminal with 700,000 TEU/year capacity. The container terminal became operational in February 2005.
