Jiu Jitsu feels like a deeply 2020 movie in that it is a barrage of WTF choices that hit without mercy until you either give in and go with the flow or just go mad. Or, hey, maybe both.
Co-written and directed by Dimitri Logothetis, Jiu Jitsu's setup involves a comet, a Burmese temple, an extraterrestrial "warrior of death," and the human fighters who dare to take him on battle. The premise has a dash of Predator, offering an anthropomorphic alien foe that views the world in a blue-hued heat-vision and can turn invisible in the jungles that surround the temple. Like the stories in Ancient Aliens, Brax (Ryan Tarran) came to Earth thousands of years ago to teach humans jiu-jitsu. Apparently, so he could come back every six years and prove he's still the master. He also has Wolverine-like healing abilities and Zuko-style fire blasts to his advantage. But who said the invading alien looking to pick a fight would play fair?
If you've become accustomed to MCU and DCEU-level action, you'll want to manage your expectations before settling in for Jiu Jitsu.
