Lyndon Baines Johnson was the 36th president of the United States, who served from 1963 to 1969. He was elected as the vice president during the 1960 presidential election where he served as John F. Kennedy's running mate. He was eventually made the president in November 1963, following the assassination of President Kennedy.
The Johnson family had been in Texas for generations. Farmers and ranchers, they had helped to tame the state and had fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. Lyndon's father had the gregarious gifts of a politician, and three years before Lyndon's birth, at the age of twenty-seven, he began serving as a Texas state representative.
Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, in Stonewall, Texas. Johnson's father, Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr., had served in the Texas legislature. After he lost a large sum of money trading cotton, he struggled to raise his two sons and three daughters.
